Ullapool to Stornoway is the main gateway to the Outer Hebrides, CalMac's crossing of around two and a half hours from the pretty whitewashed port of Ullapool over The Minch to the Isle of Lewis. Stornoway is the largest town in the Western Isles, the cultural heart of Lewis and Harris, and from there the island unfolds with its standing stones at Callanish, ancient Carloway broch, vast beaches and the Gaelic culture of the islands. The crossing of The Minch can be lively, with the chance of dolphins, whales and seabirds along the way. The ferry carries cars, motorhomes, bikes and foot passengers, with a couple of sailings most days. Vehicle space is in strong demand in summer, so booking well ahead is strongly advised for anyone bringing a car to the Hebrides.
