Kennacraig to Port Askaig is one of CalMac's two crossings to Islay, the famed whisky island of the southern Hebrides, taking around two hours from the terminal on the Kintyre peninsula. The route sails down West Loch Tarbert and across to Port Askaig, a tiny harbour tucked beneath wooded slopes on Islay's east coast, looking across the Sound of Islay to the wild Paps of Jura. Islay is renowned for its peaty single-malt distilleries, its birdlife and its sweeping beaches, and Port Askaig is also the jump-off point for the short hop to Jura. The ferry carries cars, motorhomes, bikes and foot passengers, with several sailings a day shared between the island's two ports. Booking vehicle space ahead is wise, especially around the island's popular whisky festival and through the summer.
