Newcastle to Amsterdam is the only direct ferry from the North East of England to mainland Europe, and DFDS runs it as a nightly mini-cruise. The King Seaways and Princess Seaways sail from the Port of Tyne at North Shields to IJmuiden, the port for Amsterdam, in about 16 to 17 hours overnight. With cabins, restaurants, bars, live music, a cinema and even a casino on board, many travellers take it as a short-break cruise as much as a way to cross the North Sea. A connecting coach links the IJmuiden terminal with central Amsterdam, and drivers are quickly onto the Dutch motorway network. The terminal at Royal Quays is signposted from the A19, and there is a coach connection from Newcastle Central station, so the route suits foot passengers and drivers alike.
