Dover to Dunkirk is DFDS's alternative to the Calais crossing, and a favourite of drivers who want to skip the Calais traffic. The ships take about two hours — half an hour or so longer than Calais — but the route is frequently a little cheaper, and the terminal at Dunkirk sits directly on the A16 motorway, which is handy if you are heading for Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany or eastern France. DFDS runs up to a dozen sailings a day on modern, roomy ferries with cafes, shops and outside decks. Dover's Eastern Docks are easy to reach from the A20 and M20, and because Dunkirk's port is a little out of town you avoid the queues that can build at Calais in peak season. It carries cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and coaches.
About two hours, roughly 30 minutes longer than Dover-Calais.
DFDS is the sole operator, with up to 12 sailings a day.
It is often a little cheaper, less congested, and the port routes you directly onto the A16 towards Belgium and the east.
